Two families caught thieves on camera after they stole a car and other cherished items. Now, they are asking for the public’s help.

“They were very sneaky about it, hunched over. The guy actually had a tissue in his hand so he wouldn’t get fingerprints on my door,” said Drew St. John, whose backpack was stolen from his car on Saturday evening in South Lubbock.

Drew’s mother, Kelly St. John, said it is worrisome that this happened to her son.

“Lubbock is a nice place, so you feel comfortable and you get a wake-up call,” she said. “I don’t know where the sense of entitlement or morality comes in, but they’re probably the same people doing this over and over.”

Meanwhile, a thief stole a firefighter’s car from Abbey Glen Apartments on Thursday, along with many valuable belongings.

“He lost all the certificates he had being in paramedic school, being in fire academy, and none of those documents can be replicated,” said Stephanie Bennett, the victim’s brother.

The victim said his car was locked, but the police report said he left the keys in the ignition and locked it with his clicker. After it was stolen, the suspect used the victim’s credit card at multiple places across the city. Surveillance footage showed the suspect using the debit card at Smokeshop, according to the store and family.

The family found items dispersed throughout the city, but police told the family it was the eighth car stolen that morning alone.

“If that says anything about how those criminals are getting away with it, it’s super frustrating,” said Bennett.

Both families filed police reports, and nobody has been arrested. The Bennett family is still looking for their 2010 silver Chevy Silverado.
