West Texas cities covered in snow over the weekend are preparing for the effects of a lot of melted snow. Already alleyways are muddy and they’re expected to get worse. The City of Wolfforth is preparing for trash pick-up to be delayed, especially if resident’s dumpsters are located in dirt alleyways.

“It was a real wet snow. That’s going to create bigger problems for getting our trash dumped,” said director of public works at the City of Wolfforth, Doug Hutcheson.

There’s more than 15 miles of dirt alleyways in Wolfforth. The city is expecting them to get pretty muddy after the 10 inches of snow finally all melts. They’re expecting it to possibly stop garbage collection altogether for at least a week since garbage trucks have a hard time passing through muddy roads.

“It just continues to stay wet until it eventually dries up,” said Hutcheson. “It’s an ongoing effort, it’s not going to be an overnight deal.”

In the mean time, Wolfforth will put dumpsters at the end of streets where needed to prevent the dumpsters from overfilling.

“The snow, it always takes longer for it to melt and dried up so we can work on the dirt alleys. It’s always a problem,” he said.

The City of Lubbock also preparing for some issues when it comes to trash collection.

“It’s going to create some muddy conditions, so we’re asking for everyone to be patient with us,” said Wood Franklin, director of public works for Lubbock.

The mud prevents other types of city works as well. So don’t expect any repairs to water lines, electric or other utility work to happen before those roads dry.
