The City of Lubbock planned to consider three resolutions Thursday night, that could expand the Hub City once again.

There are four tracts of land (9.5 square miles total) being considered for the annexation, and Mayor Pope said it would take a while for the process to be completed.

The tracts include an area north of Lubbock along I-27, which is north of Loop 289, east and west of the airport. On the northwest side, there is an area along North Frankford and west to Milwaukee. On the west side, the council is planning to consider an area west of Upland and south of 34th Street, north of Marsha Sharp Freeway. On the south side, the council will consider an area south of 146th Street off Quaker Avenue.

All four properties were recommended by the Annexation and Growth Advisory Committee. City Planner Drew Paxton said the project has been in the works for a while.

“A couple of them, we’ve been looking at over a year,” Paxton said, “Gathering bits and pieces…trying to figure out what boundaries fit best and what all it will entail.”

Paxton said an annex is considered on a case-by-case basis, and this one just makes sense.

“…To have the municipal airport within city limits is common practice, and then also trying to protect the North I-27 corridor from future development.”

The question still on everyone’s mind is how much the additional land will cost, and whether or not it will be worth it. Paxton said it’s too soon to determine those details.

“We’ve seen a few industrial-type complexes or businesses interested in that area, of course LEDA has some areas and the Lubbock Business Park, so just kinda continuing that momentum.”

If the resolution is approved at City Council Thursday night, it will move forward with two public hearings, and then ordinance hearings throughout the year.
