The Code Enforcement Department conducted a monthly neighborhood deployment, going out to look for code violations and interact with the community.
“We’re here to educate the public,” Code Administration Director Stuart Walker said. “You may have a violation on your property you didn’t know as a violation.”
This month, they visited the Buenas Casas neighborhood off East 19th Street, looking for unkept yards, junk vehicles, tall weeds, unpaved parking areas and trash. They brought out large roll-away dumpsters to help clean up some of these violations, as well.
They found 230 violations. These violations are broken down below:
Weeds and Rubbish: 96
Zoning: 50
Junk Vehicles: 73
Property Maintenance: 11
Open and Accessible Structures: 6 newly reported
Walker said they are also checking for any health and safety violations, or anything “out of the ordinary.”
“Assuredly, if we came across something that didn’t look normal or like it belonged in the neighborhood, that’s something we would bring attention to,” Walker said.
Walker added they can only patrol for things in the public view, so they rely heavily on neighbor complaints.
“We aren’t here to break anybody’s privacy, so we aren’t looking over fences, unless we have a specific complaint that came from the public that we needed to look into,” Walker said.
Their office receives 40 to 60 complaints a day, and during the summer months, that can jump to nearly 100.
