Community Celebrates a Day of Prayer

People across the community came together Thursday to celebrate the National Day of Prayer.

More than 400 people attended the Chuck Walker Memorial Community Prayer Luncheon at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center.

The event, organized by Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, was hosted in memory of Chuck Walker, a former Chamber Executive Committee board member who passed away.

Speakers at the luncheon spread messages of good health, togetherness,  faith and even prayers for the agricultural community.

“We have different people saying in their heart what they feel and need to be prayed for at this time. It’s non-denominational,” said Christy Weld, vice president of program, services and events for the Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber Foundation donated $2,000 to the Kingdom Prep Academy in honor of Walker and the luncheon keynote speaker, Dr. L. Ken Jones, CEO of Interim Healthcare.

Meanwhile, at the gazebo of the Lubbock County Courthouse, another community celebration of prayer day took place.

“I pray for rain for Lubbock, West Texas and farmers,” said Gary Boren, county judge candidate. He joined today’s events to be with the community in celebrating the blessings of the city, state and nation.

About 30 people attended the event to listen to music and join in on a group prayer.
