Community fills courthouse gazebo in remembrance of 9/11

Veterans and the Lubbock community filled the Lubbock County Courthouse gazebo on Tuesday to remember those who sacrificed their lives in the September 11 terrorist attacks, and pay tribute to our nation’s heroes.

“We are not here to remember the day. We are not here to remember the events of that day. We are here to memorialize the fallen of that day and to honor the heroes who rushed into danger to rescue those who were wounded and to save lives. We are here to honor first responders every day since then and of course, military men and women serving in combat for the same reason, to keep us safe,” said Ysidro Gutierrez, a member of the American Legion All-Service Honor Guard.

People filled the grass to honor the fallen by listening to music, giving a moment of silence and honoring the 21 gun salute.

Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Patriot Riders and other veterans also assisted in the ceremony.

“That day made me realize that things could happen in our country that can happen in other countries, because we usually feel like we are safe, then something happens,” said Lila Waters, whose brother died in combat.

“We are celebrating what they did for our country, and thanking them and continuing to thank the soldiers we have now,” said Tommy Jeter, whose father served in the military.
