Company makes adjustments as Lime scooters return to campus

On Thursday, Lime scooters and bikes are once again on Texas Tech’s campus after the company pulled its fleet following the student celebration where several of their scooters were set on fire.

The student celebration stemmed from the men’s basketball team advancing to the national championship.

Marshall Mays, a student at Texas Tech, said he has seen a lot less on campus since the incident.

“Some of my friends have had to walk all across campus to get around,” Mays said.

According to school officials, they are working with Lime to make improvements.

“Partnering here on campus is a learning experience,” said Stacy Stockard, media relations coordinator for parking & transportation services.

Lime released a statement saying, in part: “The safety of our riders and the community is our number one priority. Every day we’re innovating on technology, infrastructure and
education.”

Stockard said Lime and the school will continue to learn and make adjustments as they continue forward.

For example, the decision to pull the scooters from the streets on Wednesday was due to high winds.

“Canceling for the wind that was something that hadn’t been done before but it’s something that found needed to be done,” Stockard said.

Here is the full statement from Lime on safety and precautions to take when riding a scooter:

At Lime, the safety of our riders and the community is our number one priority. That’s why every day we’re innovating on technology, infrastructure and education to set the standard for micromobility safety. We encourage users to ride safely:

  • Before starting your trip, walk around the scooter and do a visual inspection. Don’t use that vehicle if something isn’t right and report it to our customer service team.
  • Once you start your Lime trip, give the brake a tight squeeze to ensure it’s working properly.
  • Comply with any scooter audible or visual warnings to slow or adjust your speed.
  • Ride defensively: wear a helmet and reflective or bright clothing, respect the right of way, and don’t ever ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and always ride in bike lanes when available.
  • Ride smart: follow the rules of the road, keep both hands on the handle bars, don’t use your mobile device while riding and avoid wearing headphones.
