LUBBOCK, Texas– Almost a year after the death of former city councilman, David Nelson, the state of Texas is looking at a bill to keep his memory alive.
In Commissioner’s Court on Monday, they unanimously showed their support for House Bill 380, which would rename Highway 41 in Lubbock County, the David Nelson Memorial Highway.
Nelson was riding his bike when a car hit and killed him on July 18, 2018.
“David worked hard. David loved this community. He has served his community from the very beginning,” said Ainsley Nelson, David Nelson’s wife.
Curtis Parrish, the Lubbock County Judge, said Nelson was a friend to not just him but many people in the community.
“It’s important to remember people who have done great and remarkable things for the community and David was one of those,” Parrish said.
Both Nelson’s family and county commissioners want this to also be a reminder for all vehicles to share the road.
“I think it’s just a good opportunity to be aware of your surroundings and what is on the road with you, because there is a person, there is a husband, there is a brother, a friend out on the road too,” Nelson said.
The bill is sitting in the Senate where it has to be voted on and signed by the Governor before it is passed.
