One of Lubbock’s finest has turned in his badge, but it’s not who you may think.

Riki, a 9-year-old Belgian Malinois, is making the transition from “partner” to “pet.”

In five years on the force, he has assisted with several narcotics seizures and captured many suspects during patrol work.

Corporal Brock Gruner and Riki have been partners for Riki’s whole career, ever since Gruner joined the K9 unit.

“It’s like he’s basically my best friend,” Gruner said. “He’s watching my back just like a normal partner would.”

EverythingLubbock.com first met the pair at one of their trainings, along with the entire LPD and LSO K9 units.

Gruenr said he believes Riki had a “very successful” career with LPD.

Now, Riki will enjoy “retired” life at home with Corporal Gruner and his family.

“They work extremely hard for us during the time that in service for the PD, so we want to make sure they have a little bit of time to enjoy being a dog,” he said.
