Crosbyton is just one of several towns hammered by Tuesday night’s hail storm. Many people dealt with shattered windshields and broken house windows. For the Crosbyton Courthouse, almost every window on the back side was blasted out.
At Crosbyton High School, you can still see the evidence of the baseball-sized hail smashing through two panes of glass on one side of the building. That window was just one of 20 that were shattered.
However, the courthouse and the school weren’t the only buildings that suffered from damage in Crosbyton.
“I was screaming for dear life,” said Martha Childers, who was driving home when the storm appeared out of nowhere. “We turned the corner and the hail, the first one to hit my car, went straight through my window.”
Childers and her daughter eventually got to their carport, but they were stuck inside their car for 30 minutes waiting for the hail to stop. While they waited, they watched as their second vehicle and home were pounded by the hail.
“I was like, ‘Shut the door, stay in the car. There’s nothing we can do, we’re stuck. Just pray, that’s all we can do,'” she said.
Insurance agents came the next day to assess their property. Altogether on Tuesday night, the Childers had two car windshields shattered, several hits to the siding on their home, multiple house windows broken and a hole in their roof.
“It just started hitting us like, I don’t even know, lava, I guess. I don’t know how to explain it. It was so bad,” Childers said.
To make matters even worse, the Childers have lived in this home for less than a year.
Her daughter attends Crosbyton High School, just up the road from their house. Crosbyton ISD spent the day assessing the damage the school buildings received.
“Everyone appears to be safe, all the children are safe,” said Crosbyton ISD Superintendent Shawn Mason. “We’re very lucky it wasn’t worse than it was. Of course, it’s all property damage, so we’ll get that taken care of.”
As of now, there’s no estimate on the cost of damages for Crosbyton ISD and the Crosbyton Courthouse.
