A dog was injured at Clapp Dog Park after being attacked by another dog, on Thursday. Luckily, a dog trainer was there who stopped the fight before things got worse. Now she’s speaking out, saying people need to be vigilant of their pets when they bring them to these parks.
“Most times, most dog fights don’t lead to anything more than that, just a squabble. Unfortunately this time, the dog was latched onto and on top of the other dog and thrashing its head,” said Rebecca Miller, dog trainer and owner of Your Hope For a Better K-9.
“She was injured, she actually had to go have an abscess removed,” she added.
Miller said there are a couple things an owner can do to stop a fight. This included being intimidating by making a lot of noise, spraying the dog with water, throwing blankets over their eyes, and in the worst case scenario, hitting the animal with something to distract them.
“I was able to grab the collars of both dogs and have the other handler which was the owner of the dog that attacked, mangle his dog and get him away from this dog. Miller said if both owners grab the dogs from being the neck, this could be an effective and safe way to intervene. The dog cannot turn to bite the person with this method, she said.
Dog owners said taking their dogs to the park can be scary because of situations like these.
“My dog would be seriously injured, that I would have to rush them to the emergency vet or they could be seriously injured to where they died. That would be my worst fear,” said Holly Haliburton, a dog owner.
Miller recommended getting the owners information, in case their are serious injuries that need to be followed up on after the fight.
