LUBBOCK, Texas– Residents of East Lubbock signed a petition over the weekend to save the bank in their area.

A letter was mailed to residents stating that the Wells Fargo inside the United on Parkway Drive and Zenith Avenue would close in July. Anton Lewis grew up in East Lubbock and said losing the bank would be a huge inconvenience.

“There are a lot of elderly people that don’t have vehicles, that don’t have means of transportation,” he said. “Not just elderly but a lot of people that bank with Wells Fargo.”

Gordon Harris, a community advocate, created a petition that collected hundreds of signatures in just one weekend.

“You go out on 98th and Slide, you have four banks on each corner, and we just have a piece of a bank,” said Harris. “So ya, It’s very important to our community.”

Harris said in addition to the elderly, losing this bank would have a negative impact on the disabled, citizens who live in rural towns east of Lubbock, local businesses, and the future generations in East Lubbock.

“If they don’t have anything, there’s not going to be nothing,” he said.

Gordon plans to create an online version of the petition on Monday to get it in front of more eyes. He also intends to reach out to city leaders and Wells Fargo to work on a resolution.
