Pest control experts are seeing an increase in black widow spiders in homes in the area.
“Most insects, especially black widow spiders, like something that is dry and with not a lot of air activity,” said Brian Duncan, president of D’s Pest Control.
Dangerous arachnids like the black widow spider can be crawling around your home without you even knowing.
“It does seem like we’re seeing more black widows, just due to the fact that we’ve had a pretty mild year. Most insects, the eggs hatch in the summer, late-early fall,” Duncan said.
You might be able to spot one in your garage, shed or near cluttered areas. Arachnids thrive in dark corners.
“Removing a lot of the debris in your yard, keeping your garage as uncluttered as possible will go a long ways to help prevent a good habitat for the black widow spider,” Duncan said.
One thing black widow spiders are known for is being solitary. You’ ll never find a colony of them.
“So the black widow spider gets its name from the fact that after it mates, it wants a meal, which is usually the male,” Duncan said. “Normally we only find one or two black widows. Now, you may find one or two in this part of the house, one or two in this part.”
Duncan says to be cautious because you might not be able to tell if it really is a black widow spider.
“Here’s the problem, a black widow is not always black. They can also be a brown color,” Duncan said.
