Family and friends mourned the loss of David Nelson on Wednesday, after he passed away early that morning in a cycling accident. When reflecting on his life, they said he was a great servant to the community.

Formerly a city councilman from 1997-2002, this year he was running for Lubbock County Court at Law Position No. 3.

“I think of David the way he handled his service on the city council, how positive he was and the things he did,” said Steve Massengale, a city councilman and close friend of Nelson.

Nelson grew up in Lubbock, graduating Monterey High School, and then attending Texas Tech for his bachelor’s and law degrees.

His friends described him as positive, happy, athletic, and an advocate for his community.

“Ironically, the last time I saw David he was advocating for safety for cyclists on the road,” said Massengale.

When Nelson was not working at his law office, Nelson and Nelson, he enjoyed spending time outdoors.

“He loved exercising, riding his bike, and running,” said Massengale.

He had a strong passion for biking, even leading the West Texas Endurance Club.

“David loved to go the distance, say for an Ironman 70.3. I saw him finish on blisters one day. I think he had new knees and he was just determined to do this distance again as he had before, and knocked it out of the park that day,” said Keith Burt, a fellow cyclist.

Greg Davis, a cyclist and owner of DFC Cycles said his aspirations went beyond those on the bike.

“Just proud of him for having done the things that he was doing, and being an advocate for cycling and being an advocate for good and life and aspiring to public service,” said Davis.

While he lost his life too soon, his friends hope the community remember this story when they drive or bike on the roads.

“It’s a good reminder to eliminate distraction when you are driving, because in a moment’s notice, things can change,” said Massengale.

In a statement from his family, they appreciate the support and are asking for your thoughts and prayers at this time.
