In an instant, these two men’s lives forever changed. We’re told by family friends that both men only had to have one foot amputated, but suffered from other less severe injuries.
“Luckily, there was quick action by people nearby, got in the water, took those individuals on their boats and the immediately got to shore,” said Texas Game Warden, Aaron Simms.
Both men are still recovering at UMC but are in satisfactory condition. Friends have started a fundraiser for one of the men to help with growing medical costs.
“There’s going to be a lot of medical expenses,” said French. “That’s what they’re going to use it for. They could use all the help. Insurance is good but insurance doesn’t cover it all,” she said.
Estimates for prosthetics are reaching $50,000. And in just a couple days, hundreds of dollars have already been donated.
Game Wardens are still investigating exactly what happened.
“It was a tragic event, whether they were swimming near the prop, or jumped in, or if they were sitting on the back with their feet dangling in,” Simms said.
And the incident, a reminder about the importance of boat safety.
“Be aware of your surroundings. If you’re going to start up the engine, be aware of your surroundings,” said Simms.
