Family Loses Everything, After Trailer Fire Spreads Nearly 2 Acres

Flames engulfed the Cooper family’s trailer home, before spreading into a grass fire nearly two acres wide.

The fire began Wednesday afternoon, just south of Wolfforth off County Road 1400.

“Things that can’t be replaced are gone. Just gone. All of our memories,” Penny Cooper said.

The family said they lost everything, from irreplaceable antiques to the lives of their pet kittens. The couple agreed, however, they were just thankful no one else was hurt.

“You know, people get a lot of things in life and put them in their house,” Chuck said. “But what matters is what we have right here, your family. Material things can be replaced.”

They said they are thankful to everyone who came to help, including a neighbor who saved their dog Max.

Woodrow, Wolfforth, and West Carlisle Volunteer Fire Departments responded, along with the Texas A&M Forest Service, as the fire spread to surrounding areas.

“It was headed toward a second trailer house, so basically we went into defensive mode,” Wolfforth Volunteer Firefighter Lance Hamilton said.

He added, they’re in “defensive mode” often these days.

“The manpower is just getting tired because we are working all we can work,” Hamilton said.

Tyler Brown of the Texas A&M Forest Service said, this year has been busier than most.

“It’s been pretty much an everyday thing, with the high winds, the low relative humidity, and the lack of precipitation over the last few months,” Brown said. “When you start seeing fires like this pop up, even if you are not in a burn ban, it should kind of tell you the conditions are right and things can go south really quickly.”

The Coopers are begging people to hear that message.

“We are the reason everybody needs to have fire safety because we are now homeless. We are without everything,” Penny said.
