The family of 31-year-old Daniel Javier Hernandez wants to find the individual who fled the scene after killing Hernandez with their car. They are offering a $1,000 reward for any information leading to the person responsible.
“He went to war and he served to fight for our freedom, and for them to go and run over my brother and leave him like roadkill, like an animal … I hope you realize what you are doing to me and my family,” said Manuel Lorenzo Hernandez, Jr., Daniel’s brother.
Hernandez died Sunday morning in a hit-and-run accident at West 50th Street and FM 179.
The family says his six kids no longer have a father.
“I just want to give up sometimes, but when I see these babies, I just got to be strong for them,” said Manuel.
Prior to the accident, Manuel said Daniel was with his girlfriend, but they got into a fight, which is why he was walking late at night.
“Him and his girlfriend were fighting back and forth and he got out of the car. She went to the house to pick up the other car and when she came back, she didn’t see him,” said Manuel.
Through the reward, Daniel’s mother Doloris Fernandez hoped they could more quickly bring justice to their son.
“I want to be able to get peace. I want to be able to make sure whoever did this will be responsible and turn himself in. Someone please let us know who, if they heard anything,” said Fernandez.
The family described Daniel as a caring, protective patriot.
“He served in the Army for four years and he went to Iraq and was awarded the Global War on Terrorism Award. He was an all-American guy, and loved his kids and friends,” said Manuel.
The scene is still be investigated by DPS, who said they are examining video surveillance footage and awaiting an autopsy.
