Texas Tech fanatics are still excited about Tuesday night’s game where they knocked off No. 10 Kansas in Lawrence. Now fans believe this one game proves Texas Tech basketball is capable of legendary things.
“They kept going and keeping the lead, and at the very end when they hit that slam dunk, I was like ‘Wow! We just beat Kansas on the road.’ I mean for the first time ever,” said Texas Tech student McKenna Garrison. “For us to beat Kansas is amazing.”
The 85-73 win was historic for the men’s basketball team. It’s the first time Tech has defeated Kansas in Lawrence.
“The whole game we were kind of ahead and I just kept thinking, ‘Just stay ahead, you can do it, just don’t lose the lead,'” Garrison said.
Several die-hard fans braved freezing temperatures to welcome the team back to Lubbock last night and congratulate them on the big win. Students are hoping the hype around TTU basketball stays alive.
“How we are at football games is exactly how we should be at basketball games,” said Garrison.
Tech plays Kansas again on February 24. The next game is Saturday against the Kansas State Wildcats at the United Supermarkets Arena.
“Fans have been coming out, even with the students not here so hopefully, we’ll fill it up,” said Robert Giovannetti with Texas Tech Athletics. “I think this team deserves a sell out this weekend, so hopefully we have a sold-out arena to welcome the guys home and give them some energy for the Kansas State game.”
Texas Tech Athletics said after the big game, fans clicked online and started buying tickets for Saturday. This weekend is expected to be packed, so the department recommends arriving early to avoid traffic and parking issues.
