At approximately 11:30 p.m. last night [Thursday], an officer involved shooting occurred in the 3300 block of Grinnell Street.
Officers with the Lubbock Police Department Special Operations Unit were attempting to serve an arrest warrant out of Lubbock County for a parole violation on drug charges. This individual is a known felon and was flagged as armed and dangerous.
Our officers received intelligence that the suspect was in the area of 3300 Grinnell Street. Officers set up a perimeter and waited for the individual to leave a residence in the area.
Once the suspect walked outside, officers approached him and identified themselves as police officers. The suspect then pulled a pistol out of the waistband of his pants. One of our officers fired his weapon at the suspect, striking him. The suspect was taken to UMC with serious injuries.
A pistol was recovered at the scene.
The Lubbock Police Officer who fired his weapon will be placed on paid administrative leave which is normal protocol for officer involved shootings.
This is an ongoing investigation, and we will release more details as they become available.
