Two days after firefighters responded to a large cotton warehouse fire, they continue to battle the flames Tuesday on Locust Avenue.
Initial emergency response Sunday evening included one truck, four engines and a battalion chief, according to Captain Kevin Ivy with Lubbock Fire Rescue.
“We have had at least one crew here, but in the beginning, we had at least two crews,” he said.
While the department abides by cold weather protocol for firefighters in freezing temperatures, he said it is more difficult when the fire burns for a longer duration.
“We started doing three-hour rotations, so every three hours, we bring on a new crew. That way they don’t get cold,” he said.
While at the fire, the fire engines continue running with heaters inside in case firefighters need to warm up. They have a rehab van for more extreme weather with more resources keeping firefighters safe, Ivy added.
The firefighters do come prepared and know if it’s cold weather, to wear warm clothes, he said.
“With the cold weather, they always bundle up and they are ready for it,” Ivy said.
No information has been released on the amount of cotton lost, but Ivy suspects the fire will burn for a couple more days.
