It’s been 14 years since one of the most gruesome murders Lubbock has ever seen. The Cooper family was brutally killed in their home.
Former District Attorney Matt Powell said this case has haunted him ever since, and it’s one he wished he could have tried before he retired.
On a cool October day in 2004, investigators walked into an East Lubbock apartment and found a family of four brutally killed.
Powell worked that case when he was just an assistant DA. But even now, 14 years later, he says the question of what happened to the Cooper family still haunts him to this day.
“To take the life of three kids, in the fashion that their lives were taken, is beyond belief,” Powell said.
Tammy Cooper and her three young kids were the victims in one of the most terrible crime scenes police said they have ever seen.
“That one haunts me more than probably a lot of them do. I think about that one a lot,” he said.
Police don’t have a suspect, but they think a man nicknamed “Butch” could have more information. They are hopeful new tips will come in so they can make an arrest.
Powell said when they do, he’ll come back to Lubbock.
“I hope they’ll make me a special prosecutor when they find the guy who did that crime, because I’d love to come back and try it,” he said.
Police need more information to help close this case. If you know anything that might be helpful, call the Crime Line at 741-1000.
