Flags flew at half-staff at the Yoakum County Law Enforcement Center Sunday in honor of fallen Deputy Jason Fann.
According to DPS, 28-year-old Fann was responding to a crash on State Highway 214, just south of Plains, when he lost control of his patrol unit and rolled. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Fann was a husband and father of two.
He was a full-time Deputy Sheriff in the county, but also served as a Seagraves Police Officer, a member of the Plains Volunteer Fire Department, and the recently-appointed Fire Marshal in Plains.
Friends mourned Fann’s loss and said the entire community was impacted by his life.
“He was the epitome…the definition of a public servant,” Wesley Moore said. “Always quick to help. Always quick to be there and serve others. Dedicated to the job…so much.”
Moore works as an investigator in the District Attorney’s office and was a close friend of the Fann family.
“Yesterday was the worst day of my life,” Moore said. “”We went numb and are completely devastated, but from the ashes is born something even more beautiful.”
Moore said Fann was the type of person who was always helping others.
“We believe that Jason went out with his boots on, the way he wanted to, doing what he loved and helping others as he swore to do,” Moore said, “and forever will be revered for it.”
“Losing one of us is like losing a blood brother. It is extraordinarily hard,” Moore said. “He wasn’t just our friend on the outside or our friend at work. He was both and beyond that. He will forever be revered as one of our greatest friends…one of our greatest friends. We should always remember him as a loving husband, son, father, brother, and great law enforcement officer.”
The investigation into Fann’s crash is still ongoing.
