Gas shortages across the city caused drivers to rush to the pumps over the past couple days, worried about not being able to fuel up their cars.

“It’s kind of hard for us going on road trips because you can’t get gas,” said Glen Robinson, a tow truck driver. “We just have to hit places when we can.”

Multiple drivers said they had to stop at two to three stations before finding one that still had gas.

“The premium was still there, but the unleaded was covered with a plastic bag,” said Jim Samford, a driver.

Bolton Oil Company said while they are not low on gas, the spot outages in the region are “partially caused by maintenance work performed at the refinery close to Borger. This refinery supplies gas to several locations in Lubbock and surrounding areas.”

Bolton and United Express both ensured the shortages would be short-term.

Until stations refill their pumps, Bolton advised against rushing to the stations to fill cars up.

“If consumers start ‘panic buying,’ then more stations could be out of fuel just because of the time necessary to haul product to the locations,” said Charles Bolton, owner of Bolton Oil Company.

This is a press release from United Express regarding the gas shortage:

We don’t have any information to share about what is causing the supply delivery delays so encourage outreach to Phillips for comment if they have someone available.

Due to internal issues experienced by some of our major supply partners, many area fuel retailers, including United Express, continue to experience intermittent fuel supply delays.

United Express has great relationships with all of our transportation and supply partners and we are working diligently to minimize the inconvenience to our guests. We are continuing to receive orders throughout the day and we expect very few locations to experience any long-term outages.

Updates from our supply partners still indicate that these delays will be short-lived. Time frames to 100% functionality are referenced in days, not weeks. We will share updates as we have them.
