There’s very important work being done every day through the Hospice of Lubbock.

“Our mission here at the Hospice of Lubbock is to provide dignity and hope during end of life care and we do that for the patients that we serve but also their loved ones,” explained Cheryl Presley, Volunteer Coordinator for Hospice of Lubbock.

And they’re looking for more volunteers so they can continue to give the best care possible to hundreds of people in our community.

“Caring for someone you love is very important work but it can be nonstop so a volunteer can relieve some of that stress and provide some comfort in that way,” Presley said.

Hospice of Lubbock has about 80 volunteers helping provide that relief.

Volunteers like Darlene Lopez, who’s been helping for the past 7 years.

“They’re so lovable and so adorable,” Lopez said.

Lopez says it’s a tough but very rewarding opportunity.

“It’s really just like going to see your grandma or your grandpa,” Lopez explained. “Just be there. It’ll be so easy to just be there for an elderly person. I don’t have my grandparents anymore and so I love to go and talk to them and listen to their stories.”

Hospice of Lubbock serves over 600 people a year and are always looking for more people to help.

“I was just listening to Mother Teresa this week and she says the fruit of service is peace,” Lopez said. “You feel at peace doing things like this, not only for yourself but the family members and the person who you’re visiting. They feel a little more peaceful knowing that someone is there for them.”

Hospice of Lubbock is having a volunteer training the weekend of October 12th.
