For the past several years Covenant Health and the YWCA of Lubbock have teamed up to provide free mammograms for women all over the South Plains.

“Not everyone can afford it and that shouldn’t be a reason that you don’t get your mammogram,” said Covenant Mammography Technologist Corinna Allen-Robison.

Allen-Robison has been doing mammography for 38 years.

She knows mammograms can save a woman’s life.

That’s why she says she’s so thankful for Covenant’s partnership with the YWCA.

“We help those who don’t have insurance or those who are considered underinsured so they just can’t afford their deductible so we help them get these basic screenings,” explained Jennifer Riley, Director of Women’s Health at the YWCA.

The program is called the Women’s Health Initiative.

They work with over 1,000 women in 18 different counties on the South Plains every year.

“We have women come back year after year and we help them,” Riley said. “Or have women show up with a lump that needs to be evaluated and see where we need to go from there.”

It’s all made possible from grants and also community events like the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

“75% of the money raised is granted out to local people and we are one of those people,” explained Riley. “Last year we helped over 400 women in our community with the money raised from last year’s race.”

“There’s no reason not to get this done,” explained Allen-Robison. “There’s some way they’ll help you get this done. They don’t want you to wait because the longer you wait, the worse it gets.”
