It’s not just the doctors and nurses helping the patients at Covenant Health.

A number of volunteers are helping the patients day in and day out.

One of those volunteers is Ann Hamilton.

Hamilton, or Grandma Ann as everyone calls her, is a retired teacher.

“I love reading,” Hamilton said. ” I have read stories to kids since I got out of college.”

Every Wednesday afternoon she brings 4 or 5 books and reads to the kids at Covenant Children’s Hospital.

“Sometimes children can come down and be right here with me,” Hamilton explained. “But more often than not the children have to stay in their rooms and watch it on television.”

Hamilton’s storyhour is broadcasted live on all the TV’s in the patient’s rooms.

So even if a kid is isolated, they can still enjoy listening to the books.

“These children are stuck in the hospital and as anyone who has been in the hospital knows, it gets very boring,” Hamilton said.

Hamilton hopes her books can help make life feel a little more normal and bring a smile to their faces during a stressful time.

“It feels good but it’s really important to make them feel good,” Hamilton said with a smile.

Every child who listens to Grandma Ann gets a brand new book and blanket, donated from people in the community.
