LUBBOCK, Tx. — Covenant Children’s does a lot for the children who are sick in our community.
But they can’t do it without donations.
A Lubbock nonprofit, Tough as Nails, donated boxes of toys to the Pediatric Oncology Department at Covenant Children’s.
The organizer, Kellie Hill, has a close connection with the hospital.
Hill’s son Hagan developed leukemia at 1 1/2 years old and passed away shortly later.
When they were in the hospital, the family received donated toys and gift cards from the community, and she wanted to do what she could to give back, in honor of her son.
“We want to give back,“ said Hill. “There were so many days where a little toy or a gift card to go get dinner makes a difference. Just that relief made every moment better.“
For the past three years Tough as Nails has put on a CrossFit competition to raise money and get donations for the hospital.
“It tugs at my heart that little ones have to go through such pain but yet they’re so brave and tough,“ said Emmanuel Ramirez who helped drop off the donations.
“It’s almost an honor just to accept this donation on behalf of our patients and their families,“ said Child Life Specialist at Covenant Children’s, Kathryn Pylant. “And for a family who has been there and has been through it and for them to use Hagan’s legacy in such a positive way to inspire other families to just keep fighting.“
Hill said she’s happy to make such a difference to these families during a tough time.
“I never thought we would touch the families the way that we had,“ Hill said.
Tough as Nails also donated gift cards for gas, groceries and food for the families with kids in the hospital.
