Every Tuesday morning you’ll find a group of retired men with tools in hand helping the community.
They’re part of Backyard Mission; a non-profit group that fixes homes for the disabled and elderly around Lubbock.
“We primarily work on getting people warm and dry and secure,” explained volunteer Jim Taylor.
Taylor has been involved with Backyard Mission since the beginning.
“Over the past 25 years we’ve worked on 1,400 homes here in Lubbock,” Taylor said. “We install storm windows, storm doors, replace doors that have been kicked in, trim around windows anything we can do to make their living conditions better.”
Some projects they can get done in one day but others can take months.
“The reason we’re here is because Jesus loves them and we feel that’s what Jesus wants us to do,” explained Taylor.
Taylor says no matter the project, they work hard to make sure it’s perfect.
To help answer prayers of total strangers.
“It’s a real privilege to be part of the answer to what they’re praying about,” Taylor said. “Love your neighbor and we can’t think of a better way to love your neighbor than give them some help with their house.”
All the work Backyard Mission does on these houses is from donations.
If you know someone who needs some help on their home, they can be put on their waiting list.
It’s about a year long, but these men are determined to get every project done that they can.
