They say it takes a village to raise children.
And the village of moms involved with Live Oak MOPS is doing amazing things to teach their children the importance of giving back.
MOPS is a group of moms who fellowship together, share advice with one another, and give back to the community.
The group meets twice a month at Live Oak Community Church.
“MOPS is for moms who are pregnant or have children all the way up through kindergarten,” explained MOPS co-leader Brandi Holder.
This month these moms helped get the Heart of Lubbock Community Garden ready for springtime.
“It’s a free community garden open to anyone who is interested,” explained Beth Roesler.
Roesler started the garden five years ago.
It’s located in the Heart of Lubbock neighborhood at 21st Street and Avenue X.
“Things that we specialize in are tomatoes, okra, beans and peas,” Roesler said.
But to keep it thriving, it takes a lot of hard work from volunteers.
“It’s a very good feeling when you know that you’re about to help someone else out,” Holder said. “And my kids are out here and they’re learning what serving looks like first hand.”
The group picked weeds, planted new vegetables seeds and cleaned up the garden.
“It’s just really good to be out in the fresh air and be in the dirt and breathe in good sunshine,” Holder explained. “It’s really cool to bring our kids out here and let them see how this process happens where vegetables come in the first place not just the grocery store.”
“It’s a community project and it’s for the Lubbock community and we couldn’t do it without people coming out here and volunteering their time, their energy, and their resources,” explained Roesler.
