In 1929, Conrad Hilton opened a hotel in Plainview, which has been shut down for more than 30 years. However, on Wednesday, it re-opened as an affordable housing community called Conrad Lofts.

Ranada Jack, Plainview resident, said she remembers what the building used to look like.

“The ceilings were falling down, there was graffiti everywhere, the vandalism was enormous,” Jack said.

For decades, the 8-story building stood in ruins, now the $6 million dollar project is ready for tenants.

“It sat in a dilapidated state,” said Carri Eisenhauer, with Wilhoit Properties, Inc.

There are 29 apartments with one to three bedrooms available. There are also historic aspects of the original building inside.

Eisenhaur said in 2015, the state awarded historic tax credits that allowed the developer, MRE Capital, to be able to come in to purchase and restore the building.

“You’re gonna see original tile that we have meticulously restored, the exterior of the building, they had to hire specific contractors to be able to handle the restoration of the building,” Eisenhaur said.

Jack said she’s thrilled with the renovation and hopes this spot will bring in more businesses to the downtown area.

“It’s a proud moment for Plainview to have a building like this of it’s magnitude to be brought back to life,” Jack said.

The apartment complex is ready for people to move in and they are already taking applications. Eisenhaur said tenants will be able to move in within the next few weeks.
