When the bitter winter weather hits Lubbock, homeless people find refuge at the Salvation Army and Open Door. However, a local pizza shop is also helping do their part.

Terri George said he became homeless shortly after moving to Lubbock. Looking for a bite to eat, he said he stepped through the doors of Giorgio’s Pizza.

Two years later, George said he now returns almost every day.

“They are nice people. Casual and quiet,” George said. “I like things quiet.”

Daniel Torrez, the co-owner of Giorgio’s Pizza in Downtown Lubbock, said George is quiet but pleasant. Whenever George comes by, he said they want to make sure he has what he needs.

“You never know the other person’s situation, what they are going through, what they’ve been through,” Torrez said. “So we just try to help out even if it’s just a slice of pizza or water. It might make their day.”

When he can, George said he offers to pay for his food. He just appreciates the warm haven whenever temperatures dip below freezing.

“Sometimes I buy. Sometimes they give it away,” he said. “I don’t consider myself lucky, I just consider myself like everyone else.”
