Homeowners on the South Plains have just over one week to protest their property appraisal.
Al Bendeck said it’s his fourth time protesting, so he went into the hearing well-prepared.
Bendeck said he wants other people to know that once your taxes increase, you can’t go backward, so you might as well do your best to lower the rate while you can.
“Lubbock is growing. Lots of new construction is going on, lots of commercial properties are coming in,” Bendeck said, “The coffer should be full of tax revenue coming into the county, but they’re nailing all us property tax owners.”
Bendeck protested his valuation Monday.
“I’m a big proponent of Governor Abbott’s freezing property taxes, and I hope that happens sometime soon…but until it does happen, I’ll continue to protest.”
LCAD’s Chief Appraiser Tim Radloff said he’s hoping more people with concerns about their appraisal will do the same.
“They present their side of why they believe they’re overvalued, and we have an appraiser who presents our side…of why we think they don’t.”
Radloff said it’s not too late to file, the deadline is Wednesday, May 31st.
“If you want to protest, please come on down. Fill out your paperwork, we certainly want you to be able to take advantage of the system.”
Bendeck said though he was able to drop his valuation by five-thousand dollars at the hearing, he’ll keep trying to work the system and appeal that appraisal once more.
“If you don’t come and protest, and try to get your valuation down to a reasonable price,” Bendeck said, “Then when the tax bill comes, don’t protest…don’t cry.”
