Inaugural Mayor’s Marathon Held Sunday in Lubbock

The City of Lubbock hosted the inaugural Mayor’s Marathon on Sunday at the Berl Huffman Athletic Complex.

“I’ve been blown away. It’s a great day and we’ve had a huge turnout all around the track,” said Mayor Dan Pope.

One thousand community members and visitors to the Hub City participated in the full marathon, half-marathon and 5K races, according to Ben Lawson, the City of Lubbock’s communications & marketing manager.

The course took participants around Lubbock on Texas Loop 289.

“It was actually kind of a cruel joke because Lubbock is the flattest place I’ve been in my life and they put a marathon on the only place that have hills because it’s man made the loop,” said Jeff Chandler, first place finisher in the men’s marathon.

Jeff Chandler (2:45:45) and Magaly Soto (3:04:44) secured first place in the marathon, marking their place in the history books for the first man and woman to win first place in the Mayor’s Marathon. Chandler is a graduate student at Texas Tech University. Soto is from Arlington.

Roger Brooks (1:37:04) and Dina Pedroza (1:40:40) were the first to cross the finish line for the men and women in the half-marathon. Cooper Bradshaw (18:37) and Cassidy Clark (22:39) finished in first place in the 5K race.

The youngest individual in today’s event was three-years-old and the oldest individual was 76 years-old, both participating in the 5K event, according to Lawson.

The event attracted 450 visitors to Lubbock to run the race this weekend. Participants in the marathon had the opportunity to qualify for the Boston Marathon.

“I was qualified already but I wanted to get my time down,” said Magaly Soto, first place finisher in the women’s marathon, and a native of Arlington, TX.
