KAMC’s Storm Team Meteorologist Alex O’Brien has the forecast for 6.15.18
TODAY: A summer-like days is ahead with temperatures in the low to mid 90s and sunshine expected. The forecast for Lubbock is 94 degrees. Winds will be light to breezy from the south.
THIS WEEKEND: Come Saturday we will begin to see the change in the weather pattern. More clouds start to build into the South Plains through the day, but we will see enough sunshine to make it to the upper 80s and low 90s. Then Saturday evening, rain starts to move into eastern New Mexico from the remnants of Tropical system Bud and crosses the state line into west Texas Saturday night. There is potential for heavy rainfall, up to about an inch, for the western half of our area on Saturday night. Be aware of potential flooding. Then by Sunday the moisture travels into the heart of the region, with a 30% chance of rain with mostly cloudy conditions region-wide. The forecast for Lubbock on Sunday is 88 degrees, with rain possible in the morning and evening.
LOOKING AHEAD: Next week, the energy from Bud will be moving out, but extra humidity and water vapor is ushered in from the Gulf of Mexico. While we are in between systems, we may see a drier day on Monday. But, this keeps our rain chances at 20-30% through the first day of summer. With tropical air-masses such as this, hail potential is minimized due to the warm nature of the system. This will be especially true for this weekend. There is a potential of widespread 0.50″ of rain, plus isolated areas near 2″ likely. Do not expect rainfall all day long, but little by little accumulations adding up through the week. The sky will be mostly cloudy to overcast and temperatures will be below average in the mid to upper 80s.
