With July being vehicle theft safety month, we’re bringing you information about vehicle theft in the area and how to keep your vehicle safe.

A brand new Ford Focus was missing for two weeks when police found it late last week near the Byron Martin Technology Center just blocks away from the convenience store it was stolen from.

“The police said they called on Friday, we didn’t get a message from them, but they did contact us on Monday, they told [my son] Brandon that they towed it to Lubbock Wrecker Service,” said the mother of the vehicle theft victim, Kim Lehman-Brown.

It cost several hundred dollars for her to get her son’s car out of the tow yard.

“It was $320 and some odd cents to get the car out,” Lehman-Brown said. “The car was stolen, and when you end up having to pay $325 to retrieve your stolen car it does feel like you were robbed a second time.”

Beyond the extra costs, the thieves put on a thousand extra miles on the car and left the inside pretty trashed, now they’ll have the cost of getting the car detailed as well.

“Basically we have a lot of cleanup to do, license plates to replace, registration we can’t get it out on the highway or drive it right now,” Lehman-Brown said.

She wants to use this experience to teach other people to take preventative measures so this doesn’t happen to you.

“It is a great lesson for people and it’s also great that its raising awareness,” Lehman-Brown said. “[my son] I think has learned a lesson to be more vigilant not to leave his keys where someone else could possibly steal his vehicle.”
