A local law firm is trying to make kids separated from their parents at the border feel more comfortable.

On Wednesday, President Trump signed an executive order to keep parents and kids together at the border. While the children await their reunion with their family, The Carlson Law Firm began collecting blankets and toys for these kids at detention centers in cities near the border. Russell Shrauner with the law firm said the idea was inspired by seeing the foil blankets kids had while in these centers.

“We saw human suffering, children in cages, children sleeping under foil blankets, and that just doesn’t seem right,” Shrauner said.

While the government decided on how to proceed with the issue, Shrauner and his colleagues wanted to bring a smile to the children’s faces.

“Hopefully it’s a distraction from the place they are in and makes it a little more cozy and they have something for themselves,” said Max Hinojos, a legal assistant at the firm.

Due to the limited items allowed in the children’s facilities, the Colson Law Firm is asking for people to donate things like blankets, coloring books, crayons, clothing or face wipes. The firm will organize transportation of the items down to South Texas, but they are asking for Lubbock’s help.

“I’m calling upon the great people of Lubbock to show what it means to be a West Texan. What it means to give back,” said Shrauner.

They will hold the drive for about one month, before they transport the goods down to South Texas.

“We would like to gather donations for a month and get them down there,” Shrauner said. “If we see it’s doing well, we might bring it down earlier and hold it open longer.”

Donations can be dropped off at The Carlson Law Firm, which is located at 2424 50th Street during business hours, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are located on the third floor.

They are working on setting up a donation box in Midland, Texas as well.
