Lubbock celebrates Super Bowl LI

People on the South Plains were glue to their televisions watching the New England Patriots take on the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI Sunday.

Most Lubbock residents celebrating the big game at Walk-Ons sports bar told EverythingLubbock.com they wished they were watching the Cowboys instead, but it didn’t stop them enjoying the competition regardless of who was playing.

“Everyone is getting excited at the same time for the same stuff, so, it’s really cool it’s a fun environment. It doesn’t feel like work when you’re watching the game like this, it’s just fun,” Bartender Caitlin Mills said.

The game kicked off in Houston with Former President George H.W. Bush and Mrs. Bush making an appearance at the coin toss, while the crowd at Walk-Ons continued to grow.

Patrick Sherrill got to the restaurant right after it opened to make sure he got a prime seat to watch the game.

“Lunch was busy and then it kind of died out, and now here we are and it’s pretty much a full house.”

Even in the Hub City, customers could get Super Bowl-themed drinks, with cups supporting the opposing teams.

“Any sports event that we have, it gets really packed, so it’s pretty similiar to some of those [today] and we’re gonna be expecting more and more crowds as the game gets going so I’m excited,” Mills said.

Lots of people weren’t fans of either team, but they still had their own ideas as to who would take the title.

“It is what it is, the Falcons are gonna be starstruck, they’re gonna choke…I don’t know what to say, but
Tom Brady’s been to the Super Bowl 7 times, he’s gonna take his 5th win from the Super Bowl,” Joe Roberts said.

Sherrill, on the other hand, had another idea.

“I prefer the Falcons to win, cause I’m tired of the Patriots winning, but either way, I don’t care.”

And Mills had good reasoning behind choosing the team she chose to support.

“I’m honestly a total Cowboys fan, I’m really sad that it’s not the Cowboys. But the Falcons are Tech colors and I really am rooting for the underdog. I don’t really want the Patriots to win, so I’m going for the Falcons.”
