MedMinute: New dads at risk for postpartum depression, research says

The number of pregnant women with opioid use disorder during childbirth quadrupled over the 15-year period from 1999 to 2014. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found significant increases in each of the 28 states that provided data.  People with opioid use disorder showed a problematic pattern of use that can lead to health problems or failure to meet major responsibilities at work, school or home.

New research suggests an equal amount of new fathers suffer postpartum depression as mothers. Presentations at the annual convention of the American Psychological Association showed about  10% of men suffer the “baby blues” and 18% of new dads experience anxiety. The most likely contributing factors were sleep deprivation and time spent away from work.

A new study found average salt use is safe for the heart.   An 8-year international study of 94,000 adults found a cardio-vascular risk for people who consumed more than two-and-a-half teaspoons a day. The World Health Organization recommends people limit salt intake to a teaspoon a day.   Many doctors advise watching salt intake to keep blood pressure in check.
