The death toll from Hurricane Maria may be as high as 1,139, according to a new study in JAMA. The official death count of the storm that hit Puerto Rico last September was 64.
Researchers used official government records for the study, accounting for who died during the storm as well in the following months.

Even low levels of air pollution could affect the heart. UK researchers found people exposed to air pollution levels within guidelines have changes in heart structure.

New research suggests schools districts need to be better prepared for a crisis. CDC researchers found while the majority of districts have plans to address mental health needs and reuniting families after an emergency, about one in four districts fall short of these goals. Many districts also don’t have policies to prepare for an infectious disease outbreak.
