A traffic light at 93rd Street and Quaker Avenue was meant to make the intersection safer, but neighbors said it’s not helping.
There are two problems neighbors said make the intersection dangerous: People run the red light, and there’s limited visibility for people turning out of their neighborhoods. Neighbors said it’s just an accident waiting to happen.
“I drive this two or three times a day and probably two out of three times, somebody is running this light,” said nearby resident Peter Wierzba. “Every morning. Every morning I see somebody drive through there.”
And this last time, he caught it all on camera, hoping to spread awareness of this dangerous intersection.
Drivers running red lights aren’t the only problem at the intersection, either. Drivers leaving the neighborhoods on either side have limited visibility, making it harder to see red light runners.
“If he was driving straight into the intersection and somebody came across, he can’t see to the left and he can’t see to the right because it’s blind,” Wierzba said.
There is a sign warning people traveling north bound that there is a light ahead. However, Wierzba said it doesn’t give people enough time to slow down because it’s hidden.
“When you’re coming off the curve, suddenly you see a light at the corner of your eye, but you can’t really see what the sign because you’re still focused on navigating the curve,” he said.
He said there’s one easy solution to several big problems.
“You have two potential dangers: One is the intersection, and the other is the ‘S’ curve. Both can be monitored by having law enforcement there to keep an eye on things,” said Wierzba.
Police have received several calls about the intersection and told EverythingLubbock.com they have been monitoring it and will continue to do so.
