Panhandle South Plains Fair to renovate barns

For a century, millions of people have been enjoying the South Plains Fair. Last week, thousands showed up to enjoy the rides, exhibits, and livestock.

However, you may have noticed there are some buildings that need a little fixing up.

They have plans to fix up the barns within the next year.

“As far as the barns go, we are gutting the barns, we’re keeping the structure, but we’re replacing everything inside with state-of-the-art equipment,” said Jennifer Wallace, general manager at Panhandle South Plains Fair.

Some of the buildings on the fairgrounds are more than 60 years old.

“We’re gonna give it a paint job, a long overdue paint job, do some insulation in there,” Wallace said.

This year, more visitors means more money for fair organizers to make these renovations.

“So our carnival percentage, they were up about 49 percent, and our gates were up about 36 percent,” Wallace said.

When the South Plains Fair is over, the fairgrounds are used to rent rent buildings out, have concerts, and even camps in the summer.

“So, there’s always usually something going on at least once or twice a month out here,” Wallace said.

They also hire people to make sure everything looks stays clean year-round.

“It’s a couple of people that have been with the fair for years, many years, they’re gonna be here hosting and driving around, making sure everything is OK at the events,” groundskeeper Lashonda Johnson said.
