Residents across town experienced flooding after a downpour Wednesday.
Velma Gonzales has lived down the street from Stumpy Hamilton Park for over 30 years. She said every time it rains, her street floods.
Every time it rains we have to clean out back room,” she said, explaining that her back yard fills with sewage as well.
“It’s a big problem,” Gonzales said.
Gonzales was not the only resident with struggles. Cars stalled on several different blocks of 19th Street, and many major intersections flooded for hours. At least one Covenant patient trying to drive to the emergency room got stuck and had to be helped out of her car by firefighters.
Dozens of Texas Tech students had to make alternate plans to leave campus.
“I didn’t see any damage, but there was a lot of high water,” said student Zack Boothby.
Boothby abandoned his shoes in search of an off-campus meal.
“I tried to roll up my pants, but the water was up knee-deep some places,” he said.
Waits for tow truck services were up around 2 hours, stranded motorists said.
Gonzales said she hoped the City of Lubbock would do more to address her neighborhood’s flooding problem. Two of her neighbors spent Wednesday evening unclogging a stormdrain themselves to allow water to flow away from homes.
“It is a problem, and it’s too much water,” she said.
