Red Cross Sets Up Donation Center Inside South Plains Mall for Harvey Disaster Relief

The Red Cross in Lubbock worked to streamline the donation process for Lubbock residents who want to help their fellow Texans dealing with storm devastation.

In addition to their website, they are offering a “text-to-donate” option, where if you text ‘“Harvey” to the number 90999, $10 will be donated to relief efforts.

They are also taking donations at their office on 19th Street, where volunteers said it has been busy.

“The phone has been ringing off the hook,” Donation Coordinator Rosemary said. “We have got people calling, asking how they can help.”

Volunteer Coordinator Mike Posey said the best ways to help are donating financially or signing up to volunteer. He said their volunteer system has been flooded with applications.

“The best way really, is to go to redcross.org,” Posey said. “There is a big banner that says ‘Donate to Harvey Relief.’”

The Red Cross has also set up a convenient donation table inside the South Plains mall, near the men’s Dillards. There will be someone manning that table from opening to closing time for the next few days.

“Up until about five minutes to 9 last night, we had people stopping by,” Volunteer Brad Larson said.  “They’re saying they are so happy to have an opportunity to help because they didn’t know how to help, and everybody wants to help.”

Larson assured people  their money is going straight to help people affected by the storm.

“91 cents of every dollar that the Red Cross spends, goes to humanitarian efforts,” Larson said. “So, nine cents or less goes to salaries and other stuff.”

He said any little bit helps, but they mainly need financial donations not items

“There’s a lot of organizations that collect goods: water, diapers, clothes and things,” Larson said. “We don’t want to take anything away from that because everyone wants to help in any way they can. But one thing about if you donate to the Red Cross, we have partnerships with big national companies. So whereas if you could go buy a case of water for 10 dollars, we may be able to go buy 10 cases for a couple of dollars.”

Larson said you can say it helps to donate to the Red Cross General Fund, so designate your donation to the South Texas area specifically.

“You tell us you want it to go to Hurricane Harvey, it will go there. There’s no question.”
