LUBBOCK, Texas– Excessive amounts of trash and bulky items dumped in alleyways have left some residents around Lubbock feeling frustrated.
Since moving into her home with her family one year ago, Teri Manahan said people have not stopped dumping items like couches, old doors, and boxes full of trash in the alley outside her residence.
“It is very frustrating,” said Teri Manahan, a resident in Central Lubbock. “I could be a good person and just pick it up and dump it myself but I shouldn’t have to do it.”
Monahan said she leases her home and worried it makes her look like a poor tenant.
“It’s on me so I don’t want to be accountable for anyone else’s actions,” she said. “It makes me look disgusting and that’s not who I am.”
In addition, she said she does not want to get a ticket for an issue she did not create.
Jeff Griffith, the Mayor Pro-tem, said due to the storms, the city’s codes department is backed up with calls. However, he recognized the problem with the trash buildup in the city’s alleyways.
“It is our concern. We want people to be good neighbors and take care of your own belongings,” said Griffith.
To report trash dumped in an alley, call the City Codes or Solid Waste Departments. If issued a ticket after placing a pick-up request, the city said contact them so they can wave the ticket.
