With some of the rain and severe weather the Hub city has experienced during the spring months, there can often be flooding in several intersections.
Calvin Humphries knows what to expect when it rains, having lived in Lubbock for more than 30 years.
“It doesn’t even have to rain hard and it’ll get flooded easily,” Humphries said. “It could be a park, it could be a parking lot, it could be your back yard.”
Michael Keenum, a City of Lubbock engineer,said they’re working on the problem.
“We’re always trying to make it better,” Keenum said. “We’re looking at what is inconvenient to the citizens.”
He said one of their smaller projects begins Monday, May 13th on 98th St. and Salisbury Ave.This project costs more than $800,000, compared to a bigger project they’re working on that costs $90 million.
“[We’re] being mindful of the money it costs too because we try to make sure we don’t increase storm water rates to have to pay for these storm water projects,” Keenum said.
Keenum said the storm drainage system won’t prevent flooding from happening. However, it will stop the water from moving into businesses and homes nearby.
“The big thing we’re interested is preventing structures from flooding,” Keenum said. “Making sure that structures are elevated so they don’t flood when we have rain events.”
Humphries said he’s ready to see some changes.
“You [have] to worry about how the drainage problem is affecting people, especially when it comes to minorities,” Humphries said. |
