The Texas Tech Rodeo Team has a new head coach in town.
At 23 years old, Stetson Corman is the youngest head coach ever for the team. He told EverythingLubbock.com he’s looking forward to building on the team’s success, and recruiting athletes who are competitive in the arena and in the classroom.
For Corman, the position is more than just a job, it’s an honor.
“It runs deep, my dad came to school here, my uncles came to school here, my grandmother works for the school, so Texas Tech, we’ve always bled red and black. To become part of the program, and just to be a part of Texas Tech is something great, but to also be a part of the rodeo team, something I hold close to my heart…that’s even better.”
Corman rodeod at Tech and graduated last May. He said the job ‘came out of the blue.’
“I was excited, I was a little nervous because I hadn’t really ever thought about being a rodeo coach…but once I sat down and really thought about it, I knew it was a job that was for me and it was something that I had a chance to be good at.”
The opportunity to coach past teammates is a unique one, but the athletes were enthusiastic.
“I think it’s good, he already knows us and we already know him, you’re not going to have that awkward bonding session at the beginning, you can just come here and get straight to work,” Senior Gage Williamson said.
“We have gotten to look up to him for so long, and now we get to look up to him even more because he’s our coach,” Team Roper Macie Friess said.
Since its beginning in 1923, Tech Rodeo boasts 8 individual national championships and 3 team national championships.
“Tech rodeo, we just have really really strong alumni, lots of support, and I think it’s something that’s just growing. We’re excited,” Corman said.
