A big Texas Tech supporter Colin Baxter was very proud of the Red Raider win on Friday. KAMC News first introduced you to him a few months ago.
The Tech student became blind after suffering from a brain tumor. Now back at school, Baxter works closely with the men’s basketball team, sitting front and center at every home game.
However, as they played in Oklahoma on Friday, Baxter said he watched from the comfort of his home.
“We have the possibility to go far,” Baxter said. “I believe we can.”
Baxter said he pays attention to the game through sound and he says he knows exactly what’s going on.
“My context clues are the noises of the game,” Baxter said. “Like the squeaking of the sneakers, it [helps] paying attention to all the noises you hear during the game.”
Baxter is the newest red raider basketball team manager.
“What I wanted more than anything was to look back 20, 30 years from now and know we won a big 12 title,” Baxter said. “That was my biggest dream this season.”
His said his good luck charm for Friday’s game was a piece of the net from winning the Big 12 regular season title.
“When the team got back from Iowa State, Coach Beard told everyone he wanted me to lead the team out and be the first to cut the net,” Baxter said.
He said he keeps the piece of the net very close to him.
“I think sticking with what our team’s made of is defense, if we can keep other teams to 60 and below in points every game it would really give us the best chance of winning,” Baxter said.
He said that’s what the team’s strength has been all season.
Before every game, Baxter said he texts the team some words of advice, so they know he’s still right there with them.
“Everybody has worked so hard this year to become one of the best teams ever,” Baxter said.
Texas Tech will play Buffalo on Sunday.
