Red Raider baseball fans will need to use sunscreen and drink lots of water when they go see the Tech baseball team take on New Mexico state this Friday. That’s because the game could be being played in record breaking temperatures. Estimated temps could reach a high of 105 degrees, and it could be even hotter on the turf at Dan Law Field.

So the Texas Tech Athletic Department is making sure the ice bags are full and the sunscreen is ready as they prepare to host the beginning of the NCAA Championship this weekend.

“Anything anyone needs, it’s all hands on deck here,” said Robert Giovannetti, with Texas Tech Athletics. “We want to make sure everyone is safe. Our fans, the players from the schools, we’re here to play some great baseball.”

They said the usual polices are in place like each fan can only bring in one sealed water bottled into the game, but this year they are placing new heat management polices to help beat the heat.

“Something different we’re doing this weekend, we’ll have a big refilling station even if you they buy one here, they can get it refilled,” said Giovannetti. There will also be cooling stations, with misters and damp towels. As well as sunscreen for fans who might have forgotten it at home. All of these services will be free.

So even though the temperatures will be hot, Texas Tech Athletics hope to see fans fill that stadium, even if it means a little sweat.

“Safety is our first priority at all times,” he said. “We want them to enjoy the game, we want them to have fun. So we feel by having these policies and procedures in place, we’ll do what we can to make sure everybody is safe in the ballpark.”
