The excitement from the Texas Tech men’s basketball team getting to the national championship continues as the school sees more engagement and donations.
According to university administrators, people are more inclined to give when the athletic teams have success. And they are seeing that now.
“They’ve had tremendous success in the past year, if you look at the Womble facility, it’s not surprising that the Elite 8 last year,” said Byron Kennedy, vice president for advancement at Texas Tech. “And the continued success that we see, projects like that happen.”
Kennedy said each year donors across the university make a difference through philanthropy, whether it’s giving for the first time or through endowment.
“These successes don’t necessarily change a person’s ability to give, investment follows that often,” Kennedy said. “We’re very mindful that we’re in a relationship business that’s built on generosity.”
According to the 2018 endowment report, gifts from alumni and donors surpassed $173 million.
Kennedy said although new donors are important, they’re continually working on their relationships with existing donors as well.
“The general desire to engage absolutely will increase and has increased,” Kennedy said. “Getting involved with your college, be it your your dollars also with your time, energy and expertise these moments absolutely drive engagement and over time engagement drives philanthropy.”
