Texas Tech officials, university police and the Student Government Association worked together in a plan to install new cameras across campus.

Police “blanketed the campus” with surveillance cameras attempting to secure every area, said Chief Kyle Bonath with the Texas Tech University Police Department.

The plans to increase security started before the Texas Tech shooting last October, Bonath said, and their efforts will continue into the future.

“This is a project that the president’s office and student government organization has been behind, and it’s been an ongoing project,” he said.

Their focus is to increase the use of “automated technology” because it is “more reliable than the human eye. The camera clarifies any questions any concerns you do have,” he said.

This method of security will also save costs in the long term, Bonath believes.

Students at the university said more cameras and security will make them feel safer.

“We are already paying for this really high-end education as it is. Knowing our money is going to something that helps us feel safer — it’s definitely worth the use,” said Alezzandra Diaz, a sophomore at Texas Tech.
